Bogojevski calls for husbands to supervise their wives, cites Albanians and criticizes Macedonian men

Statements by Petar Bogojevski, chairman of the Macedonian Concept party, about women’s place in the family have sparked a new wave of reactions. In his remarks, he cited Albanians as an example of the control that, he claims, men exercise over their wives.

In a video published on November 3, Bogojevski responded to Macedonian men who had criticized him. He claimed that Albanians prevent their wives from becoming a source of shame in cafés and on the streets of Skopje.

In the same video, he asked Macedonian men whether they liked seeing their daughters appear half-naked in front of Silbo. He also asked whether they were capable of bringing their wives home from bars.

These remarks followed his appearance on the program “Pod lupa” on TV Alfa. During that appearance, Bogojevski described a man’s reaction to his wife’s infidelity as a defense of his own dignity, claiming it did not constitute violence.

In another statement on the program, he said that keeping a woman under supervision was a man’s duty and a husband’s responsibility.

Among the many responses to his statements was one from the “General Mihailo Apostolski” Military Academy, where Bogojevski is employed as a lecturer. The academy announced that the relevant authorities would review the materials presented to determine whether he had breached his professional and ethical obligations.

His remarks were also condemned by Marija Miteva, a government spokesperson and chairwoman of the VMRO-DPMNE Women’s Union. She stressed that women need respect, not supervision by their husbands.

For its part, the Agency for Audio and Audiovisual Media Services said that, during the program, Bogojevski had downplayed and justified violence against women and children. According to the agency, he had tried to present their subjugation as a traditional value.
