BDI describes the European Commission’s 2026 report as one of the most troubling assessments of North Macedonia in recent years. According to the party, the document shows that reforms have lost momentum, European integration is slipping further away, and institutions are facing serious problems in their functioning.
In its response, BDI notes that, for the first time, the European Commission has addressed specific problems in the implementation of the Albanian language and in fair and adequate representation so clearly. The party calls this the most serious political consequence of VMRO-DPMNE’s government with VLEN, arguing that issues of equality, which should have been unquestionable institutional guarantees, have now become a European concern.

According to BDI, VLEN joined the government pledging to represent Albanians, but the consequences of its participation in government are now reflected in Brussels.
BDI recalls that the Balancer has been abolished and that the issue of a new representation mechanism has yet to be resolved. Meanwhile, according to the party, Albanian citizens and students continue to face obstacles in exercising their language rights.
The party also describes the situation in other sectors as alarming. It says there has been no progress in the fight against corruption, freedom of expression, public procurement, or consumer protection and healthcare. According to BDI, a government that promised reforms has brought stagnation in fundamental areas of the state.
At the same time, BDI notes, Albania is making progress in its negotiations and Montenegro is nearing their conclusion. North Macedonia, meanwhile, remains outside the new pace of enlargement and has yet to open even its first cluster.
BDI says citizens are paying the price for the current government’s political direction. According to the party, the country is losing time on its European path, while Albanians are once again facing challenges to rights they considered guaranteed.
The party believes the report should serve as an alarm bell for an immediate change in the government’s course. BDI stresses that equality, the functioning of the state, and the European perspective cannot continue to be undermined by this government.
