Habibi, will you swear me in?” First Muslim senator responds to JD Vance

On October 9, during an election rally, Donald Trump mocked the name of Abdul El-Sayed, the candidate for the Senate in Michigan.

“I call this man Mohamed, while some others call him Abdul. I don’t know why I feel like calling him that. But I am the president and I can call him whatever I want,” Trump declared, prompting laughter from the crowd.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance used even harsher language, describing El-Sayed as a “radical extremist” and a “psychopath.”

After his sweeping victory in the midterm elections, the 42-year-old, who is expected to become the first Muslim senator in the history of the United States, responded to Vance with a familiar Arabic term.

“JD, habibi, do you understand the great irony of fate? Do you know that, under the Constitution, you are required to swear me into office on January 1?” he said.

El-Sayed is a physician by profession and previously served as head of public health services in Detroit and Wayne County. In the election, he defeated Republican Mike Rogers, who had Trump’s support.

The Democrat’s campaign focused primarily on healthcare. However, during the race, he faced criticism and attacks centered on his Muslim faith, as well as controversy over his positions on Israel and the war in Gaza.
