Ilir Alimehmeti spoke on News24’s “Minuta e Parë” about the May 9 local elections and the possibility of becoming the opposition’s candidate for mayor of Tirana.
Asked whether he would agree to face the governing majority’s candidate, he said the public interest and opposition unity must come first. He said opposition parties should sit down together to choose the strongest candidates in all 46 municipalities.

Alimehmeti said the public wants Edi Rama to leave office as soon as possible. He said the scheduled elections are on May 9, but, in his view, Rama should leave even before then. Otherwise, he warned, Albania would be emptied of its people.
He described local government as a matter of major importance and expressed hope that groups sharing this goal would agree on joint candidates. If Edi Rama has not been removed by May 9, Alimehmeti said, an opposition victory in these elections would give them the opportunity to demand his departure as soon as possible.
Regarding his own name being put forward as a candidate, Alimehmeti said he thought he could be a good option, but the decision should be made at a joint meeting. He added that it would be ideal to choose consensus candidates for the 46 municipalities and that opposition figures would make history if they achieved this. Alimehmeti reiterated that the public interest comes first and that he would insist on reaching such an agreement.
