Rosa Capuano sentenced to 25 years in prison after admitting she killed her father to escape his control

The Court of Assizes in Mantua, Italy, has found 47-year-old Rosa Capuano guilty of murdering her father, 79-year-old Francesco Capuano, and sentenced her to 25 years in prison.

At the final hearing of the trial, Capuano changed her account and admitted that she had killed her father. She told the judges that she could no longer bear it, so she took a gun and shot him dead.

The admission marked a decisive turn in the trial. Until then, Rosa Capuano had repeatedly denied involvement in the crime. Even when questioned on October 9, she had insisted that she was innocent and had not killed her father. In her final testimony, however, she admitted shooting him to free herself from his dominating presence.

The killing took place on December 23, 2024, in Suzzara, in the province of Mantua. Francesco Capuano was shot by his daughter while inside a car parked in the garage of the apartment building on Via Biolcheria, where they lived together.

Local media report that the 47-year-old’s life was almost entirely under her father’s influence and that she depended on him financially. By her own account, she had to explain every daily action to him. Although she had expressed a desire for greater independence, she had been unable to break away from him.

The sentence matches the request of prosecutor Alessia Silimbani, who had sought 25 years in prison. Taking the admission into account, the prosecutor had ruled out a life sentence and asked for mitigating circumstances to be weighed against the aggravating ones.

In its ruling, the court did not treat base and trivial motives as an aggravating circumstance. It did, however, treat premeditation and the killing of an ancestor—specifically, the defendant’s father—as aggravating circumstances. The mitigating circumstances were given equal weight to the other aggravating circumstances.

The court also awarded Rosa Capuano’s three brothers and sister, who are relatives of the victim, a provisional payment of €150,000 in damages. The amount awarded to each of them is €50,000.
