Thousands of protesters take to Tirana’s streets for the 161st day despite warnings of fines

Thousands of people protested again in Tirana this Saturday, on the 161st day of demonstrations. Government warnings of heavy fines for those involved in acts of violence did not stop them from taking to the streets. They called for Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resignation.

Students and other citizens first gathered outside the Ministry of Education to voice their grievances, then marched to the Prime Minister’s Office. During the march and rally, they chanted slogans against both Edi Rama and opposition leader Sali Berisha.

Calling for both men to leave politics, the protesters expressed their opposition to the current political class and demanded change.

There were tensions and acts of violence again this Saturday. Several rubbish bins were set on fire, and objects were thrown at police and government buildings. The incidents occurred despite warnings of tough measures and fines, which do not appear to have dampened the anger of young people and other citizens.

Today’s rally was not substantially different from the protests of previous days. Students and other citizens remained on the streets with the same demands and political slogans, continuing a protest that has lasted 161 days.
