Google changes its rules on artificial intelligence in schools, leaving activation up to administrators

Google’s artificial intelligence tools will remain disabled by default on accounts belonging to pre-university students. Following criticism of the technology’s use and its impact on learning, the U.S. company is abandoning automatic activation and leaving it to schools to decide whether to allow it.

The new rules cover Gemini and its features within Google Classroom. They will be implemented first in the United States and then rolled out worldwide, although Google has not yet set a date. School administrators will decide whether students can use artificial intelligence during the learning process.

However, schools that choose to block the technology will also cut off students using school accounts from Google Search. This is because artificial intelligence features are integrated into the search engine, a condition that has prompted strong opposition in the United States.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has accused Google of exploiting its market dominance to impose artificial intelligence on public schools. He has stressed that no company should have the authority to determine how children are educated. The issue has also reached the U.S. Congress, where two senators have asked the company to explain the automatic activation of artificial intelligence features on school devices.

Google Classroom is used by more than 150 million students worldwide. In August, Google expanded access to Gemini, offering students homework support, study guides, practice tests and tailored materials.

Concerns that the technology could help students bypass learning have led some of the largest school districts in the United States, including those in New York and Los Angeles, to impose restrictions. In defense of the changes, Google said they are intended to give schools greater control over how the technology is used.
